Case Study: Spanish City

Northern Switchgear has been a key partner in the regeneration of the iconic Spanish City in Whitley Bay.

Commissioned by North Tyneside Council and working alongside national construction company Robertson, Newcastle architects ADP and engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald, the project forms the centrepiece of the £36M plans for the regeneration of Whitley Bay.

Northern Switchgear’s role in the project was to create an appropriate and reliable electrical supply and control system for the entire redevelopment and implement industrial switchgear to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment, to ensure that it could be operated and maintained both safely and efficiently.

Working within the early 20th Century Grade II listed building posed a significant challenge for the switchgear project. The space designated to house the electrical switch room was too small for the switchgear requirements.

Northern Switchgear reviewed the design and, in consultation with both the client and engineering consultants, adapted the industrial switchgear to meet the requirements of the project and the specifications of the building. By providing an L-shaped, low voltage switchboard, they were able to provide a safe and appropriate system to power the new development safely and efficiently.

Northern Switchgear’s role in the project has now been successfully completed, and the wider regeneration project is due for completion imminently.

Northern Switchgear’s approach to providing full service energy management solutions was invaluable in this project. They were able to design a bespoke electrical supply and control system, working around the limitations of the Grade II listed building, yet still delivering on time and to budget.
