Built in 1935, the Globe Theatre in Stockton on Tees is an iconic art deco building which was once a thriving cultural venue.
With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Stockton on Tees Borough Council sought to restore the much-loved building, making a thriving cultural hub once again and attracting the biggest names in theatre, music and comedy.
The project, managed by contractors Willmott Dixon, complemented other local developments like the Darlington Hippodrome to support the Tees Valley Combined Authority’s bid for the subregion to be named City of Culture 2025.
In addition to the renovation of the theatre itself, the project also saw the transformation of the neighbouring building to provide box office and café bar facilities. Northern Switchgear were commissioned by electrical contractors McNally & Thompson to develop switchboards, section boards and distribution boards for the project, which involved careful planning to install modern electrical systems in an historic listed building.
The project was completed successfully in 2020.

Developing systems for a heritage project such as this requires a deal of experience and understanding. NSG have worked closely with all the project partners to understand the specific requirements of the project and have overcome the challenges of designing a bespoke system to fit in a traditional building with all the safety and sustainability considerations of a new build.
