  • TaskDesign, build and installation of switchboard, panel board and GRP enclosure for a new research and development lab in Gateshead.

Northern Switchgear was commissioned by general contractor Robertson to be involved in the new BorgWarner research and development lab in Gateshead.

US company BorgWarner, which bought out electrical engineering company Sevcon in 2017, creates parts for low carbon vehicles. Their £2m state-of-the-art research and development lab is the latest phase in the expansion of their Team Valley site and will be used by engineers to develop clean technology prototypes for testing. For such an advanced electrical testing facility, it was crucial that the design of the switchboard was fit for purpose and installed appropriately. We worked with the client to understand their needs, designing a system that worked with the complex requirements of the facility and ensuring its safety. The switchboard was also built on to a plinth to prevent flooding and manufactured into an L-shape to fit the space within the factory. The increased use of electric cars in the UK has seen the Gateshead-based business grow significantly over the last three years. Northern Switchgear was delighted to be involved in such a prestigious project which is not only driving forward green technology, but also securing a significant number of local jobs.
